William hasn't heard from Markham in a while. Perhaps he has lost his address. He would like to know what he thought of "Fra Diavolo". He respects his opinion and knows his time is valuable. When the Grand Hotel is built he would like Markham to come to Mt. Macgregor to be a guest.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
